Once you connect to a remote location, you can use the Synchronize option available from Commands menu. Go to Commands > Synchronize and the window will open. Make sure to select the local path and the remote path (remote path needs permissions in order to write to directory). Check the Synchronize option and the process will start. Use the image below to see exactly how it's done.

There is a support page which provides information about this. You can access it using the link below. Although WinSCP is just a simple program, it's very complex when it comes to API/Library and code programming using NET Assembly.

Make sure to click on bolded works on the page to see the links and references for a specific command.

I'm using WinSCP and trying to move a virtual directory from my test vm server to my production server. But it says:

Permission denied.
Error code: 3
Error message from server: Permission denied
Request code: 18.

What should I do?

Answer by Stephen Prastman

The message indicated that your username doesn't have write permissions to do this because of insufficient permissions. You will have to contact the server admin to enable write permissions for your username for the location you're trying to move the directly. The second request code is related to the directory not being empty.

Here is a list with all the codes available within the application and their meaning: https://winscp.net/eng/docs/sftp_codes

The SSH host key fingerprint along with your credentials should be brought to you by your server administrator. If your administrator didn't provide you the fingerprint you should:

  • Connect to the server using the most secure way available.
  • Go to the Server and Protocol information dialog (Session > Server/protocol Information).
  • Under the protocol tab you will see a Server host key fingerprint box.

If you need more information you can access WinSCP's FAQ website.

You can't change a user during a transfer session. You will need to initiate a new session as you can see in the image below. Changing users for a session is not possible and no client will allow you to do that.
